Description

The crab Nebula has an apparent magnitude of 8.4, comparable to that of Saturn's moon Titan, it is not visible to the naked eye but can be made out using binoculars under favorable conditions. The nebula lies in the Perseus Arm of the Milky Way galaxy, at a distance of about 2.0 kiloparsecs (6,500 ly) from Earth. It has a diameter of 3.4 parsecs (11 ly), corresponding to an apparent diameter of some 7 arcminutes, and is expanding at a rate of about 1,500 kilometers per second (930 mi/s), or 0.5% of the speed of light (Wikipedia). It is amazing to think that the nebula is expanding at 0.5% the speed of light, yet differences in the shape of the nebula can only barely be made out after 20 years. A testament to the distance a light year represents.

A reprocess of my M1 narrow band data set using OIII as a luminance instead of Ha, which I usually use for L in SHO images. There is a markedly different shape to the nebula in OIII as opposed to Ha--a slightly fatter profile. The seeing was better for the OIII data, which resulted in finer resolution. Also, I am not partial to the rainbow "skittle" like appearance of typical SHO images of M1, Using the OIII as L seemed to reduce the rainbow palette. I know the background is way to dark, but it could not be helped as LP and poor conditions for much of the shoot resulted in a very high median value for many subs.
